Your First Kickboxing Class: What to Expect and What to Bring
on 10 JUN 2026 · 2 min read

The hardest part of kickboxing is walking into the gym for the first time - everything after that is easier. You do not need to be in shape beforehand: fitness comes from training, not the other way around. Gyms are used to beginners, and nobody expects anything from you except the will to show up.
For your first session you only need comfortable sportswear, water and a towel - you train barefoot on the mats or in light training shoes, depending on the gym. Most gyms lend gloves and pads at the start. Your first personal purchase should be hand wraps - they protect your joints and are a matter of hygiene. Later come your own gloves (usually 10-14 oz for training), a mouthguard and shin guards.
A session lasts around 60-90 minutes and follows a clear rhythm: a warm-up with the rope and joint mobility, the technique of the day, partner work on the pads, bag work, and conditioning to finish - core, push-ups, stretching. The pace is high, but everyone works at their own level.
The etiquette is simple and the same everywhere: arrive 10 minutes early, step on the mats in clean clothes and with trimmed nails, listen to the coach and protect your partner. Partner drills are about control - pad work is not a power contest. The glove touch before and after a drill is the small ritual that keeps respect in the room.
The classic beginner mistakes: hitting with full power instead of technique, holding your breath, skipping the warm-up and comparing yourself to people who have trained for years. One more - quitting after the first muscle soreness. That passes in days; the technique stays. And sparring is not for day one: you get there gradually, in full gear, and always at the coach's discretion.
Progress comes faster than you expect. After a few weeks the combinations start to flow, the rope stops catching your feet, and your conditioning changes noticeably - striking sports are among the most complete workouts there are.
One more thing: even a few months in the gym change the way you watch fights. You start seeing the feints, the setups, the battle in the clinch. The fighters on EFA's ring all started exactly the same way - with one first session. Come watch them live on 30 October 2026 at the Tenta Event Center - and do not be surprised if you find yourself looking up the nearest gym afterwards.
